German Chancellor Angela Merkel has challenged UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to find a solution to the Brexit crisis. Britain is expected to leave the EU without a deal at the end of October after Johnson insisted the withdrawal agreement is unacceptable. Merkel assures that an alternative could be found in the next "30 days" that would allow a no-deal Brexit to be avoided . At a press conference with the British Prime Minister in Berlin, Merkel said it was possible to reach a new deal and prevent the UK from leaving the EU without a deal on October 31 . "It was said that we would probably find a solution in 2 years. But we could also find one in the next 30 days, why not?" Merkel assured Johnson. " We need the Irish backstop removed , but if we achieve it I am sure we can move forward together," he said. However, Johnson has continued to insist that the UK cannot support the backstop in Northern Ireland contained in the current deal , which is designed to avoid a hard border with the Republic of Ireland .

Under the terms of the backstop, the UK could remain within EU trade and customs rules indefinitely , to avoid border checks between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Merkel has responded to these statements by Johnson by assuring that the backstop was necessary until a new relationship between the United Kingdom and the EU is agreed, or until London proposes an acceptable alternative.
